Stay Cool

Do you remember signing yearbooks in high school? I think my favorite thing to write (and least favorite thing to read) was “Stay cool this summer!” Today, that feels like pretty good advice.

There are a lot of fun, wonderful things to love about summer. But it can get really warm for moms and babies alike. It’s difficult to keep yourself nice and cool, but you’re probably more concerned about keeping your baby out of the heat when the temperatures outside (and inside, if you don’t have air conditioning) are getting unbearable. Here are a few ideas.

1. Get wet. If you can get to the pool, jumping in the cool water is a great way to beat the heat. But you don’t have to pay big money to get your baby wet—set up the sprinkler in the backyard and run through it, or even use a little spray bottle. Keep a spray bottle of water in the car while you run errands to spray on your baby and keep her nice and cool.

2. Cut back layers. You might have gotten in the habit of keeping a onesie under your baby’s clothes during the winter, but shedding layers is a great way to stay cool. If your baby is a girl, breezy dresses can reduce weight and keep her cool. If you have a little boy, keep him in lightweight, short-sleeved clothes. This can make a big difference in how cool your baby stays.

3. Keep treats on hand. Who doesn’t love a good popsicle? This summer, make sure you have otter pops, ice cream cones, popsicles, lemonades and other good, frozen treats on hand. Cool down from the inside out and enjoy the sweet tastes of summer at the same time!

4. Reduce direct contact. Use a baby carrier that prevents direct contact between you and Baby, like these from Kokopax. It’s nice to stay cuddled and warm during the winter, but in the hot summer months it’s nice to avoid sharing body heat.
